The Hoplite Armor Level IV Swimmer Cut Hard Armor Plate delivers certified NIJ 0101.05 Level IV Stand Alone protection in a swimmer cut profile, sold in pairs in 8x10 and 10x12 inch sizes. Each plate is built on a high-density alumina ceramic core (Al2O3) backed with layered polymer composite fiber, manufactured in the USA by LTC (Leading Technology Composites). A single-curve geometry and Cordura nylon covering complete the package. At 5.9 lbs for the 8x10 and 8.25 lbs for the 10x12, these plates fit all standard plate carriers and come backed by a Lifetime Armor Warranty.
These plates are NIJ Certified Level IV Stand Alone under NIJ 0101.05. The alumina ceramic (Al2O3) and layered polymer composite fiber construction absorbs projectiles within the plate itself, preventing the dangerous spall common to steel plate designs. No carrier is required to absorb high-speed bullet fragmentation — the plate handles it independently.
Level IV is the highest NIJ threat rating for hard armor plates, requiring defeat of 30.06 AP M2 at 2,880 ft/s. The table below lists the full threat matrix defeated by these plates.
| Weapon Platform | Ammunition | Striking Velocity (ft/s) | Striking Velocity (m/s) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rifle M-1 | 30.06 AP M2 | 2,880 | 878 |
| Rifle FN FAL | 7.62x51mm Ball/AP | 2,780 | 847 |
| Rifle M-16/AR-15 | 5.56x45mm M193/M855/SS109 | 3,025 | 922 |
| Rifle SVD Dragunov / MG PKM | 7.62x54R L/LPS/B-32 API | 2,850 | 869 |
| Rifle AK-47/M/SKS | 7.62x39mm API | 2,410 | 735 |
| Rifle AK-47/M/SKS | 7.62x39mm Ball/Steel Core | 2,410 | 735 |
The swimmer cut profile removes the upper corners of a standard rectangular plate, creating a lower-profile fit that reduces arm and shoulder interference during dynamic movement. This geometry is specifically suited to carriers with dedicated swimmer cut pockets or universal pockets that accept the smaller footprint. The 8x10 inch plate targets standard small-carrier pockets; the 10x12 inch plate fits medium-carrier pockets. Both sizes use a single-curve profile. All figures are nominal — minor variation due to manufacturing tolerance may apply. If you need help confirming fit with your current carrier, contact us.
These plates fit all standard plate carriers. The 8x10 inch size targets small-carrier pockets; the 10x12 inch size targets medium-carrier pockets. The swimmer cut profile reduces the overall footprint at the upper corners, so confirm that your carrier's plate pocket accommodates the swimmer geometry rather than a full rectangular plate. Some popular sizes may incur a 4–8 week lead time at the time of order.
These plates cannot be shipped to New York or Connecticut due to state body armor restrictions. They are also subject to US export regulations. Under 18 U.S.C. § 931, anyone with a federal felony conviction for a crime of violence is prohibited from purchasing or possessing body armor.
Yes. These plates are NIJ Certified Level IV Stand Alone under NIJ 0101.05. That is the highest threat rating in the NIJ 0101.05 hard armor standard, requiring defeat of 30.06 AP M2 armor-piercing ammunition at 2,880 ft/s.
Level III is the NIJ baseline rifle rating, covering 7.62x51mm NATO Ball at 2,780 ft/s. Level III+ is a vendor-specific special threat designation — not an official NIJ tier — typically adding M855 green tip and similar intermediate threats. Level IV is the highest NIJ-certified rating, mandating defeat of 30.06 AP M2 armor-piercing rounds. These plates are Level IV certified.
At minimum, these plates defeat 30.06 AP M2 at 2,880 ft/s, 7.62x51mm Ball/AP at 2,780 ft/s, 5.56x45mm M193/M855/SS109 at 3,025 ft/s, 7.62x54R L/LPS/B-32 API at 2,850 ft/s, and 7.62x39mm API and Ball/Steel Core at 2,410 ft/s. See the full threat table above for complete velocity data.
Swimmer cut plates have the upper two corners removed at a deeper angle than SAPI, creating the narrowest shoulder clearance profile of the common cut types. SAPI cut also removes the upper corners but at a shallower angle, producing a larger surface area. Swimmer cut reduces ballistic coverage slightly in exchange for maximum freedom of movement in the upper arm and shoulder region.
The alumina ceramic and polymer composite fiber construction absorbs projectiles within the plate itself, which prevents the dangerous fragmentation spall that is common with steel plates. The Cordura nylon covering provides an additional layer of containment. Unlike steel, you are not relying on your carrier's soft armor or spall liner to catch high-velocity fragmentation.
These plates are sold in pairs. A front-and-back setup in 8x10 weighs 11.8 lbs total; in 10x12, the pair totals 16.5 lbs. Both figures are nominal — minor manufacturing tolerance variation may apply.
